Laura is the new Executive Director of The Land Connection (TLC), a nonprofit organization that runs a nationally-recognized farmer training program and preserves farmland for diversified agriculture. Illinois soil is some of the best in the world and its currently used primarily to raise grains for processed food and animal feed. The Land Connection works to change this dynamic. We can all be proud of our farming heritage. However, unless we soon change the way we farm, well jeopardize our legacy. Laura graduated from the University of Illinois with degrees in Economics and Law. She joins TLC after 15 years of nonprofit management consulting and 10 years of practicing law. In between that work, she developed and managed her own certified organic vegetable farm in the 1990s. Her family has a small grain farm and consequently shes had the beautiful experience of having the work of farming, and of living in a farm community, be a central part of her life. She believes its a historic time of transition for the food industry and that its an honor to be part of the effort to change the way food is grown in our country.
The Land Connection envisions community-based food systems in the Midwest, in which every farmer has the opportunity to grow food in a sustainable manner, and every person has the choice to enjoy local and organic foods.
